Edinburgh snow: Major M8 disruption expected at evening rush hour as stormy weather worsens

Commuters planning to use the M8 between Edinburgh and Glasgow during the evening rush hour are to expect significant disruption, with winter weather worsening on the route.

Scottish Citylink have taken to social media to say that their 900 and AIR services are suffering delays as traffic is currently moving at around 45mph to 50mph.

STV weather forecaster Sean Batty added that snow and hail showers are causing "dreadful conditions" on higher parts of the M8 – mainly around Harthill.

The snow showers are expected to continue throughout the day, and this is likely to lead to longer travel times on the route, especially as people start to make their way home from work on Monday.

Images courtesy of the Traffic Scotland travel cameras show snow accumulating on the ground around Harthill, Bathgate and Livingston, and showers are now getting heavier in Edinburgh.

It has been snowing across large parts of Edinburgh this afternoon, with it starting to lie in Balerno and to the south of the city. As a result a number of other routes could also see longer journey times.

The Met Office weather warning for snow is to remain in place until midday on Wednesday.
