Edinburgh snow: Commuters could be 'cut off' with amber snow alerts now in place

The Met Office is warning that communities could be "cut off" after upgrading weather alerts to amber.

Heavy snow is to hit parts of the region by 2pm, with the hazardous weather expected to last until 9pm this evening.

This is likely to affect commuters travelling to and from Edinburgh, with Peebles and other communities in the Borders region set to be hit the worst.

The Met Office has warned that travel disruption is expected, especially on roads where vehicles could become stranded.

A statement from the Met Office reads: "Frequent and heavy snow showers will affect the region throughout Monday and Tuesday.

"Snow showers will occur especially over high ground, giving slight accumulations of 1 to 3 cm above 150 metres and 5-10 cm above 300 metres.

"Snow will gradually build up and in a few locations, accumulations of over 20cm are possible by Tuesday evening over the highest routes in Scotland.

"The height of the snow level will vary throughout the period, but it is likely that any snow accumulations at low levels will only be temporary."

A yellow weather warning for wind and snow remains in place across Edinburgh and much of Scotland until tomorrow.
