Edinburgh Sick Kids Hospital opening date finally set with works to finish in coming months

An opening date for Edinburgh's new Royal Hospital for Children and Young People has been set.

NHS Lothian committee papers reveal that the building is expected to be complete in September with the opening date planned for November 23, 2020.

Confirmation of this date, and a final decision, will likely be made in mid-October – around six weeks earlier.

Staff and patients were due to move in to the £150m hospital in Little France last year but for a last-minute cancellation and the discovery of serious building flaws. That deadline had already been extended from an expected completion date in 2017.

As a result the hospital has been lying empty for around nine months, with a number of questions being raised about the time taken to complete the project and its total cost. NHS Lothian chairman Brian Houston left his post in January amid ongoing issues with the hospital.

The move-in date was pushed back last summer after the ventilation system was found to not meet national standards.
