Edinburgh shoppers panic buy at Sainsbury's 'one hour after lockdown announcement'

An Edinburgh local has shares his horror after watching Sainsbury's at Murrayfield become flooded with panic buyers, just one hour after Nicola Sturgeon announced that Scotland was to go into a tougher lockdown.

On Monday, the First Minister confirmed that all of mainland Scotland was to be plunged into a March-style lockdown, making it illegal to leave your house unless you have an essential reason.

A local man has told Edinburgh Live how he was shocked when he arrived at Murrayfield Sainsbury's for his scheduled shop at around 4pm to find the the store full of people panic buying.

The shocked shopper took pictures of the toilet roll, bread and vegetable aisles looking empty, adding: "I normally shop at 4pm so this was a scheduled shop.

"The car park was 3/4 full at four when I arrived and the store was very busy.

"Trolleys were being filled with multi purchases of toilet rolls , frozen goods, veg and milk etc.

"The was no social distancing being observed."

"There were no checks on numbers entering the store when I went but on leaving the store the queue was over 200yrds and entry was being monitored."

The news comes as stockpiling was also observed in other supermarkets across Edinburgh on Monday, despite warnings from the First Minister that panic buying is not necessary.
