Edinburgh set to find out what Covid level it will be in for Christmas and New Year next week

Edinburgh is to find out what Covid protection level it will be in for the Christmas and New Year period next week.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon hopes that the tiers decided at next Tuesday's review will remain in place right through until the first week in January.

While restrictions on travel and household visits will be relaxed slightly between December 23 and 27, hospitality rules will remain in place, and depend entirely on the level imposed.

Sturgeon said: “For hospitality the restrictions will be the restrictions for whatever level your local authority is in.

“I cannot look ahead to next week’s review. It would be premature and speculative of me to do that, but we will have another review next Tuesday.

“We are hoping that what we decide next Tuesday will last through the Christmas period, and then the next review will be in the first week in January.

“I’ll set that out next Tuesday.”

The Scottish Government had come for criticism for not moving Edinburgh down to level two during this week's review.

However the First Minister says she's not holding the Scottish capital to a different standard, and the decision was made after seeing cases rise in some parts of Lothian.

She said: "West Lothian has been in level four. We see a rise in cases in Midlothian just now, and also East Lothian, which did go down a level, a bit of a rise there.

"Cases in Lothian are rising, and in recent days we’ve also seen a rise in Edinburgh

"Looking at all of that, we have to ask, if we think cases across Lothian, including in Edinburgh, might be rising a bit. Does it make sense to open things up?"
