Edinburgh set for heavy rain as Met Office issues yellow weather warning for Scotland

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for parts of Scotland.

The north of the country including Orkney and the Shetland Islands have been warned of snow and wind through from Tuesday to Wednesday.

The weather warning is in place from midnight January 4 to 6am Wednesday morning.

The Met Office warns: "Frequent snow showers and gusts to severe gale force are expected on Tuesday, leading to travel disruption, particularly for higher routes."

In Edinburgh, heavy rain is expected on Monday January 3 throughout the day before clearing up at 4pm.

This comes after heavy rain caused flooding across the city in late December just before Christmas.

Tuesday and Wednesday will see Edinburgh welcome a chilly blast with temperatures struggling to reach above 3 degrees.

While it is expected to drop to below freezing on Wednesday, Edinburgh will remain dry with sunny intervals, so locals can enjoy a crisp winter's day.

For today, January 3, the Met Office forecasts: "A cold night with cloud clearing, allowing a sharp frost to develop. More cloud and a few wintry showers reaching the west coast later, strong winds by morning. Minimum temperature -2 °C."

And the outlook for Wednesday to Friday is as followed.

"Mainly dry and bright on Wednesday, perhaps a few showers at first, lighter winds. Turning wet and windy Thursday, with blustery wintry showers following later Thursday and Friday."
