Edinburgh schools stop Scottish Government survey asking children about sex

Edinburgh schools have ‘halted’ the Scottish Government’s survey on children’s sexual activities.

The Scottish Government recently issued the census to councils throughout the country but some local authorities have been undecided about giving it out to pupils.

Edinburgh Live reported last week that West Lothian Council had decided against handing out the survey to their pupils and now the City of Edinburgh Council has decided to stop the rollout until they can discuss the matter further.

A report prepared for a meeting by Edinburgh Council on Thursday December 16 discusses the Scottish Government’s Health and Wellbeing census.

It states that the council have already been contacted by parents and their representative bodies to register concern.

The parents too exception to questions asking when they first had sex, and subsequent multiple-choice answers including ‘oral sex’ and ‘vaginal or anal sex’ and questions about use of various contraceptives.

An Edinburgh council spokesperson said: “Council questions whether asking such questions is in the best interests of young people, who may feel additional pressure around whether they ought to be in relationship and/or sexually active, and that the widespread nature of the roll-out is likely to make this the subject of discussion, and possible bullying, in school settings.”

The council has now agreed for the census roll-out to be halted until a full report is brought to the next meeting of the Education, Children and Families Committee for elected members consideration.
