Edinburgh school confirms more coronavirus cases as infections spike

A coronavirus outbreak has been confirmed at an Edinburgh school.

Gracemount High School had informed parents and staff last week that a positive covid case had been identified at the school.

Those in close contact had been advised to stay at home for 14 days.

The school has said further positive cases have now been identified.

An update to all parents, carers and staff was published on the school website.

It read: "There has been confirmed cases of COVID-19 within the school.

"Young people who have been in direct contact with the confirmed cases have been contacted and will be staying at home for 14 days.

"No staff contacts have been identified.

"The school remains open and if your young person has not been contacted then they should continue to attend school if they remain well."

The school has warned if pupils develop symptoms of COVID-19 they must not attend.

They should stay at home from when their symptoms started, self-isolate, and get tested for COVID-19.

The school previously informed parents and carers that one pupil had tested positive for the virus last week.

In a bid to curb the spread of the virus, the Scottish Government have introduced new restrictions, banning social gatherings of more than six people - both indoors and outdoors.

A spokesperson for NHS Lothian said: "The team has identified a small number of cases and contacted all of the close contacts involved to advise them to self-isolate for 14 days.

"All necessary guidance and advice is being provided and the situation will be closely monitored.

"The NHS Lothian Health Protection Team, education department and council environmental health team are working together to assess the situation and decide any next steps required.

"To respect and maintain patient confidentiality, no further details will be released.

"Enhanced cleaning measures are already in place in schools in line with national guidance.

"The school remains open and all pupils, who have not been asked to self-isolate, should continue to attend as normal."
