Edinburgh school confirms further Covid cases after return from Easter holidays

A number of staff and pupils are isolating at an Edinburgh school after a coronavirus case was confirmed.

Just a few weeks after primary school pupils were able to return to face-to-face learning full-time, Gylemuir Primary has reported new infections.

After a case was confirmed on April 18, a selection of people within the school were contacted by NHS track and trace to inform them they must self-isolate.

On Monday (April 19), headteacher Alison Thomson alongside NHS Lothian confirmed that the tracking process has been completed.

Ms Thomson also stated that the school is "following all national guidance" and added that "enhanced cleaning and infection control measures" remain in place.

Any parents whose child has not been contacted should attend school as normal, but should book a test and self-isolate if they experience any symptoms of Covid-19.

The school added: "If you have any concerns in the meantime, or if you need to book a Covid-19 test because your child has developed symptoms (high temperature, a new continuous cough and/or a loss or change in sense of smell or taste) please visit the NHS Inform website www.nhsinform.scot or for non-clinical advice call 0800 028 2816."

This week's case is not the first to be reported at Gylemuir, with cases confirmed in both December 2020 and in February 2021, just days after some classes returned from lockdown.

On February 26, two entire classes were told to stay at home for ten days after multiple cases were identified.

It comes as the First Minister is due to give an announcement later today over the further easing of lockdown restrictions on April 26.

With speculation some relaxations may be moved forward, Nicola Sturgeon is expected to confirm that the reopening of shops, gyms, beer gardens and restaurants can go ahead on this date.
