Edinburgh school closures: bus windows smashed and parks vandalised by teens

As schools closed their doors for the foreseeable future on Friday, reports online have surged of vandalism from groups of children and teenagers across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

The news comes after Nicola Sturgeon issued a stark warning that young people should not see social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic as essential.

In a Bonnyrigg community group on Facebook there were several reports of a group of teenagers smashing the windows of a Lothian Buses 49 service in the town on Saturday evening at around 9pm.

The post, which has now been shared over 400 times, saw other locals voice their concerns.

One commented: "Kids are everywhere like it’s the summer holidays, yet we’re meant to be keeping people separated."

Another said: "We were there - the window was smashed just behind the bus driver and just missed someone getting off the bus.

Edinburgh Live have contacted Midlothian Police for comment.

Meanwhile in Leith, a post was shared in a community group online outlining details of a group of teenagers vandalising popular Lochend Park on Friday afternoon - with images of the aftermath showing rubbish strewn everywhere.

One commented on the post: "Parents seem to think this is an extra holiday and they are allowed to be out and about."

Another said: "Most of this litter was collected at the litter pick last weekend, it’s sat there neatly packed since Sunday afternoon waiting to collected by the council.

"It's almost inevitable that after a while the feral kids who hang about there would see it and start throwing it around."

Edinburgh Live have contacted Edinburgh Police for comment.
