Edinburgh Sainsbury's brings in pronoun badges for staff to help avoid misgendering

A Sainsbury's supermarket in Edinburgh has introduced pronoun name badges for staff to avoid misgendering staff members.

Workers at the Murrayfield supermarket have been wearing tags that declare their preferred gender pronouns, such as she/her or they/them.

Managers and cis colleagues have also been adding their pronouns to their badges to show solidarity to the LGBTQ+ community.

A Sainsbury's representative told Edinburgh Live they "provide pronoun badges for any of our colleagues who would like to wear them."

It comes as Asda announced a similar move to make their workers feel more inclusive by introducing pronoun badges for staff to help avoid the "distress" of misgendering colleagues.

The supermarket tweeted about the move online, sharing a rainbow-coloured design, with staff now able to request a badge if they please.

The name badges at Asda come in a range of pronouns, including male, female or non-binary "they" pronouns.

A fourth option available reads: "Ask me my pronouns."

The Asda advert reads: "We're passionate about supporting the gender identity of our colleagues and know that misgendering can be distressing for all, so we've created pronoun badges for colleagues who wish to wear them."
