Edinburgh's Trams to Newhaven extension set for next phase with Leith Walk closure on horizon

The next phase of Edinburgh's tram extension project will get underway in the coming weeks, with additional road closures introduced.

Leith Walk is due to shut northbound towards the end of next month, with disruption to traffic and bus services on the horizon. Lothian Buses say further information on how their journeys will be affected will be announced in the coming weeks.

However, before then, Lindsay Road and Ocean Drive will close to traffic.

Works will start on Lindsay Road eastbound on Saturday, 7 March and on Ocean Drive, just outside the Ocean Terminal, a week later.

Road closures will be in place on both routes. Ocean Drive will be off-limits directly in front of the Ocean Terminal – from the junction of Melrose Drive to the second roundabout to the north east of the shopping centre. Pedestrian access will be maintained, while vehicles will also still be able to use the Ocean Terminal car parks and access surrounding properties.

Lothian Buses have been warning of some alterations to be aware of.

From 7 March, services 10, 16 and N16 will be diverted on Melrose Drive and North Leith Sands. Temporary stops will be set up outside ASDA on Melrose Drive and on Lindsay Road east of the North Leith Sands junction. Lothian Buses add that services 11, 200, N7 and N11 will also divert via Melrose Drive.

From 14 March Ocean Drive will close, with bus stops outside the Holiday Inn shutting. New bus stops will be put in south of the Ocean Terminal and services 11, 200, N7 and N11 will use these after taking the Melrose Drive diversion.

Services 22, 34, 35 and N22 will also use the new stops.

The Ocean Drive works are expected to continue until the autumn, while the works in the Melrose Drive and Lindsay Road area will likely last until next summer.

Edinburgh Live reported in December how the road closure on Constitution Street was having a "big impact" on traders in the area. The street shut to traffic on 16 November, and the project will continue on the route until April 2021.
