Edinburgh's Spaces for People rollout continues with new cycle lane on busy road next week

The rollout of Edinburgh's controversial Spaces for People is set to continue, with the creation of a new cycle lane.

Edinburgh Council announced it would start work on two new Spaces for People schemes next week, on Monday.

This includes widening the footpath with a one-way traffic system eastbound on Queensferry High Street and also the creation of a segregated cycle lane on Meadow Place Road, in Corstorphine.

The scheme, which was initially described as a "temporary infrastructure programme" introduced to make essential trips safer in the wake of the Covid pandemic, may be set to stay.

Edinburgh Council has approved the first steps towards making the programme permanent, having used £5m in funding from the Scottish Government to rollout various road closures and temporary traffic measures since April last year.

However, over 10,000 angry locals have signed a petition to stop the scheme from becoming permanent.

The petition reads: " Under the cover of COVID, Edinburgh Council spent over £5m experimenting with our communities' roads, our safety, and our business access by forcing through road closures, barrier cycle lanes, in-road bus stops and removing parking.

"They did this with inadequate safety assessments, no thought for disabled and elderly people, and ignoring over 10,000 objections. They promised these “Spaces for People” were temporary, but now plan to make them permanent.

"Legal opinion suggests this is unlawful."

While there has been a backlash towards the scheme, other residents support the programme. One Edinburgh dad praised, what Edinburgh Council dubbed, the city's first "quiet route".

The route, which was introduced as part of the scheme, was set to impact thousands of children and families on their school run.
