Edinburgh's Social Bite pledge to deliver 3000 daily food packs to those in need as cafes close

Edinburgh based charity Social Bite will be working to deliver food and supplies to the homeless and vulnerable after the coronavirus outbreak forced the closure of their cafes.

In a statement, founder Josh Littlejohn, confirmed that the organisation’s future has been put into “great uncertainty”.

All of their social enterprise cafes across the country have been forced to close due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation.

One in three of the company's workers have struggled with homelessness, the group that Social Bite believes will be worst affected by the pandemic.

Mr Littlejohn said: “The homeless and vulnerable people we support on a daily basis will be the worst affected by this crisis. Imagine being homeless, having no option to self isolate or stock up on supplies, with many support services you were relying on closing down.

“Alongside homeless people there will be thousands more people who end up in food poverty, families who were relying on free school meals and those who have just been made redundant due to the crisis.”

In response to these predictions, Social Bite will be turning the entire organisation into a food production and delivery service across the country from Friday 20 March, to serve the groups they know are in need. They have also pledged that with support from the Scottish Government and the public, they can produce and deliver 3000 food and essentials packages per day.
