Edinburgh's richest people named as it's revealed city has 11 millionaires and one billionaire

Edinburgh's richest people have been revealed – and it's a billionaire topping the list.

Property and finance tycoon Jim Mellon is the city's wealthiest person with a cool £1.1 billion empire under his belt.

The Sunday Times Rich List 2019 had him at number one in 2018 too – and he has gone on to add an extra £100 million to his name since then.

The 62-year-old first became a millionaire when he was in his twenties by selling Thornton Management – a firm he set up – and has since gone on to found and chair a number of companies.

Edinburgh's second richest person on the 2019 list is author J.K. Rowling with a wealth of £750 million – up £50 million on her 2018 total.

In third place is Sir Angus and Flure Grossart and family (£446 million) who made their money in finance. Businessman Brian Kennedy follows in fourth position (£275 million) and joint fifth is The Duke of Buccleuch and family with £230 million made through land and art, and software tycoon Hamid Guedroudj.

Mr Guedroudj, who founded Petroleum Experts – an engineering software business – in 1990, is the only new entry on the list.

Across Scotland Glenn Gordon and family, of whisky distillers William Grant and Sons, top the rich list with a wealth of £2.882 billion.

Their operation is valued at £2.7 billion with labels including Grant's whisky and Hendrick's Gin sending profits up by more than 14 per cent.

Robert Watts, the Compiler of The Sunday Times Rich List, said: “Many Rich Listers are this year nursing big losses due to the uncertainty over Brexit, turbulence on the stock market and the enormous change sweeping through our high streets.

“But more than half of our Scottish Rich List have seen their fortunes rise over the past 12 months – that’s a higher proportion than other parts of the UK.

“This may cheer those pushing for an independent Scotland, who will want to show that there is plenty more to the Scottish economy than North Sea oil.”
