Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens closed to public after teenage girl assaulted

Part of Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens has been cordoned off following reports a teenage girl was sexually assaulted.

Police are currently at the scene investigating the incident, which is reported to have happened on Saturday.

A number of people report not being able to access the park, with areas closed off to the public while enquiries are carried out.

Officers received the report shortly before 10pm on Saturday and they remain at the scene on Sunday afternoon. The assault is said to have happened on Saturday.

They confirmed to Edinburgh Live that part of the public park had been cordoned off while they investigate.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "At around 9.50pm on Saturday, June 5, officers received a report that a 16-year-old female had been seriously sexually assaulted at Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, on Saturday, June 5, 2021.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

One passerby said: "Princes Street Gardens are locked off to public, with police inside and a taped off area."
