Edinburgh's new public square given its official name ahead of £4.75m development

Edinbrugh's new public square has been given its official name ahead of the massive development getting underway.

The City of Edinburgh Council say the area outside the B-listed former Granton Station is being transformed into a "focal point" to be used by the community for events and recreation.

And the local authority announced on Wednesday that it would be called Granton Station Square when it eventually opens up to the public.

Ahead of the name reveal a consultation had taken place with residents and local groups and other suggested names including Esparto Square, Leviathan Square, Queen of Thanet Square and William Peck Square.

The Granton Station Square project is being carried out as part of the wider £1.3bn regeneration of the area's Waterfront.

Cammy Day, depute leader of the council, said: "Thanks to everyone who took part in the consultation for the new name. It’s really important to us that local people are involved in every step of the process as we progress our £1.3bn regeneration of the area creating homes, jobs and new communities.

"The name is important as the refurbished Granton Station and new Square will be a focal point in the area for the community and visitors to enjoy for generations to come."

The City of Edinburgh council want to start work on the historic Edwardian Granton Station building in early 2022, with plans to turn it into a creative workspace, with the derelict land in front of it used as the square.

As part of the wider regeneration 450 affordable homes will be created for sale and rent at Western Villages, and a further 150 new affordable homes will be built at the former Silverlea Care Home site.
