Edinburgh's new 'plastic free' supermarket The Refillery opens next week

A new ec-friendly supermarket will open in Edinburgh next week, and it is completely free of plastic.

The Refillery will open in the Moorgarth Waverley Market next Wednesday, November 17, and will be managed by its founder Kelly Wright, who has been running the company since January 2019.

Founder Kelly's vision for the store in Edinburgh is to "help as many people as possible move towards a minimal waste lifestyle".

The grocery store will sell a wide variety of wholefoods, spices and herbs, detergents, and other bathroom essentials that can be refilled (hence the name) in packaging you already own.

The store is also planning on selling all natural and organic fruits and vegetables, locally baked bread, milk in glass bottles that can be returned and reused, and an extensive range of non-plastic gifts and other grocery items.

The Refillery claims that in just under three years, it has helped customers save over half a million pieces of plastic by purchasing alternatives to the non-degradable product.

The company also has worked with local producers to create a well-run supply system.

Kelly said: "Waverley Market is such a great location for us to continue our mission to make plastic-free shopping accessible to more people.”

The Refillery is also aiming to showcase local foods, and will offer a deposit scheme for coffee cups to be returned to its store, which the company claims is the first of its kind in the capital.

Also offering an in-store delicatessen, other businesses that will collaborate with The Refillery include Planet Kuku, IJ Mellis cheesemonger, Chocolate Tree, Union of Genius soups, Eteaket, Unorthodox Roasters, and Edinburgh Fermentarium.

There is also a core range of refillable food items, meal kits and carbonated water refills on tap, alongside a variety of kombucha flavours.

Moorgarth's innovation director, Daryll Bruce, said: "We feel strongly about what they [The Refillery] do and believe they will help us to encourage more of our customers and visitors to the city to move towards more of a minimal waste lifestyle.

“We continue to work together with local and independent businesses to give them a platform to showcase their offering here at Waverley Market and we look forward to continuing this journey with The Refillery.”
