Edinburgh's independent coffee shops are raising money for coffee-growing communities

This week independent coffee houses across Edinburgh have been partaking in UK Coffee Week - a nationwide celebration of coffee that sees coffee shops across the UK raise money for Project Waterfall, a charitable initiative bringing clean water, education and sanitation to coffee-growing communities.

Throughout the week, thousands of coffee businesses of all shapes and sizes across the UK fundraise by donating money from every cup of coffee they serve, with 100% of the funds going to Project Waterfall.

844 million people in the world can’t access clean water with the majority living in isolated and rural areas - the same areas that grow the coffee we so love to enjoy.

UK Coffee Week 2019 will be raising funds for the ongoing work Project Waterfall is doing in the rural Jabi Tehnan district of Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is considered the biological and cultural home of coffee, and 38% of the people living in Jabi Tehnan rely on coffee for their livelihood. Ethiopia is also one of the countries that struggles most with the water crisis with 75% of the population lacking access to clean water and 95% lacking access to sanitation.

Having kicked off yesterday, UK Coffee Week is on until the 5th of May.

Lovecrumbs, Southern Cross Cage, Brew Lab, Honeycomb and Co, Art and Vintage, Ostara and Leo's Bakery are all taking part in the initative - with these venues spreading across the capital there's ample opportunity to give back to the people who play a part in producing your favourite roast.
