Edinburgh's Ian Rankin sparks confusion after viral snap of daredevil cat on roof

Edinburgh author Ian Rankin has amazed fans on social media after sharing a picture of a daredevil cat on the edge of a roof in the capital - or at least that's what it appears to be at first.

If you have a cat, look away now because the author's spine-tingling snap might make your stomach flip as it shows the outline of, what looks like, a cat wandering dangerously close to the edge of a roof.

The photo has gone viral on Twitter, racking up over 1,000 likes, as the author wrote: "Can you see the cat? (The Mound, Edinburgh.)"

One person wrote: "That is a fearless moggy!"

"Brave cat!", added another.

But rest assured this is not your four-legged friend exploring the roofs of Edinburgh and it may not even be a cat at all.

Dubbed the "Ramsay Garden cat", it's actually a rather convincing statue located on the iconic buildings in the Castlehill area, just off The Mound.

The picture-perfect buildings are a key feature of the city's skyline when looking towards Edinburgh Castle, but have you ever noticed this "cat"?

Ramsay Garden was designed in 1893 by urban planner Sir Patrick Geddes, who is said to have added the crouching cat on the roofline of the east block.

However, it's suggested that a guide book called Essential Edinburgh claimed that cat was actually the devil. It read: "On the roofline is a carving of the Devil, now so eroded it looks like a cat."

Either way, it's enough to give anyone a fright...
