Edinburgh's George IV bridge sealed off after police receive early hours 999 call

Cops responding to reports of concern for a man in Edinburgh sealed off George IV bridge in the early hours of Friday morning.

Eyewitnesses told Edinburgh Live multiple police cars and personnel from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were in attendance shortly after 1am.

Police Scotland said they had received reports of "concern" for a man in the area shortly after midnight.

He was later traced safe and well, a force spokesman said.

Pictures from the scene showed the bridge was sealed off in the early hours, with police officers at either end of the road.

Streets in the city centre were largely deserted, with the usual Hogmanay crowds nowhere to be seen after Scots were urged to celebrate New Year's Eve at home.

But police were also called to Calton Hill, where crowds had gathered for an impromptu fireworks display just before midnight.
