Edinburgh's Christmas market is still packed - with no social distancing in sight

Pictures have emerged on social media of Edinburgh's Christmas Market packed with revellers, with no social distancing or masks in sight despite pleas from the Scottish Government.

After Scotland reached it's highest recorded number of coronavirus cases on Boxing Day since the pandemic began, new restrictions were introduced including social distancing and nightclub closures in an effort to try and control the spread.

This includes attendance at all live public events for the next three weeks being limited to 100 people for indoor standing events, 200 people for indoor seated event and 500 people for all outdoor events.

In turn all of the Edinburgh Hogmanay events run by Underbelly have been cancelled including the Torch Light Procession, Street Party and Fireworks Display.

The Christmas Market reopened on December 26 and it has been requested that those in attendance wear a face mask and that everyone keeps a “small Christmas tree” distance between them and other individuals to help stop the spread of Covid.

Organisers have also asked that all those hoping to visit to take lateral flow tests before making their way into any of the three venues.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live the resident who took the pictures said: "It was 16:21 yesterday, 27th December You probably guessed, but it was Princes St near entrance to the Christmas Market.

"It was particularly busy there with no social distancing. But generally busy in town in the main shopping streets.

"Nobody appeared to be taking notice of any restrictions."

Ralph shared the tweet writing: "This evening in Edinburgh… I see everyone is paying careful attention to Sturgeon and her dentist…"

The post gathered hundreds of likes and comments with many in dismay at the crowded scene.
