Edinburgh's biggest indoor Hogmanay event Snow Ball scrapped amid Covid fears

Two of Edinburgh's biggest Hogmanay events have been cancelled days before they were set to take place.

Event leader Gary McLean spoke to Edinburgh Live today, confirming the news and expressing his deepest apologies to those who were set to attend either event.

He said the decision was based upon health and safety advice provided by the Scottish Government on large events.

On the official website, the update reads: "A SAD UPDATE Sunday 19th December ~ EVENTS CANCELLED ~

"With greatest regret and following government advice the sad decision has been made to cancel both this year's Hogmanay Snow Ball Ceilidh events - at the Assembly Rooms & the Sheraton Grand in Edinburgh.

"We are so sorry for the disappointment and will write to each person who has booked to offer a refund or an incentive to carry forward your booking to next year when the events will return.

"The site will be fully updated in a few days. We wish you a much Happier New Year. Stay safe."

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Gary said: "The reason we are cancelling these events is down to clear government advice on large gatherings, and what we feel are impending restrictions coming anyway post-Christmas.

"At this stage a lot of irretrievable costs are incurred (such as stock, food and staffing) so we need to make a call now. We also felt a clear moral duty of care to all our guests.

"We also just cancelled the sister event (Hogmanay Snow Ball Dinner for 300) at the Sheraton Grand Edinburgh - it was actually cancelled by Marriott UK who called off all large events until next year.

"We accept that it's inevitable on safety grounds and don't blame the government but support all calls for urgent financial support for hospitality and events."

Both events were sold out, and 2021 was set to be the 9th year running for the Snow Ball Ceilidh in the Assembly Rooms to take place, with over 900 expected to attend this event alone.

More information will be made available on the official Edinburgh Hogmanay Snow Ball website, here.
