Edinburgh roads closed for Friday's funeral of hero Jenners firefighter Barry Martin

Lothian Buses have announced diversions for their services tomorrow as road closures are put in place for the funeral of the hero firefighter who sadly died tackling the Jenners blaze.

Barry Martin, 38, from Fife, was critically injured while battling flames at the former department store on January 23, and tragically died four days later.

A funeral procession will take place through the streets of Edinburgh so that members of the public can pay their respects to the first firefighter to lose their life in the line of duty since Ewan Williamson in 2009.

The funeral cortege will take place on Friday February 17 and will begin by leaving McDonald Road Fire Station before travelling along Leith Walk and going onto London Road.

From there it will make its way through Abbeyhill before it arrives on the Royal Mile at 12pm where members of the public are expected to pay their respects.

It is expected to end at St Giles’ Cathedral at around 12.30pm where a funeral service will be held.

Elements of the route will be closed as a result, with McDonald Road closed to traffic between 10.30am and noon.

The Royal Mile will also be closed to all traffic between 10am-3pm.

Lothian Buses say that all uniformed emergency services will be allowed to travel free of charge on their buses tomorrow.

A statement from Lothian buses read: “There will be road closures and rolling road-blocks in parts of the city tomorrow (Friday February 17) for the funeral of Barry Martin, the firefighter who sadly died last month following the fire at the former Jenners store on Princes Street.

“As a mark of respect, all uniformed emergency services personnel can travel free of charge on Lothian Buses on Friday 17 February (those not in uniform can show their staff IDs on the bus).

“The funeral cortege will leave McDonald Road Fire Station, travel along Leith Walk and go on to London Road. It will then make its way through Abbeyhill before arriving on the Royal Mile at noon. It is expected to arrive at St Giles’ Cathedral at about 12.30pm where the funeral service will be held.

“McDonald Road will be closed to traffic between 10.30am and 12pm. Rolling road-blocks will be in effect between McDonald Road and the Royal Mile.

“The Royal Mile will be closed to all traffic between 10am and 3pm.

“Members of the public are welcome to pay their respects on the Royal Mile from 12pm as the cortege makes its way to the cathedral.

“The thoughts of all of Team Lothian are with the family, friends and colleagues of Barry Martin at this very sad time.”
