Edinburgh road closures and bus diversions on Wednesday as fire crews continue to battle blaze

Roads in Edinburgh's city centre remain closed on Wednesday as fire crews continue to battle a massive blaze on George IV Bridge.

Emergency services have been on the scene for more than 24-hours, having been called to the fire shortly before 6.30am on Tuesday,

The fire is understood to have started in the Patisserie Valerie cafe but has affected a number of nearby buildings.

A firefighter was taken to hospital after being hurt while dealing with the incident on Tuesday.

Fire crews remain in the area on Wednesday as work continues to bring the incident under control.

While Chambers Street has since reopened, Edinburgh Police confirmed early this morning city centre road closures will remain in place for some time to come.

In an update they said: "Due to a fire #GeorgeIVBridge and #CandlemakerRow will remain closed for the foreseeable. Please avoid the area meantime. Emergency services remain in attendance."

Several Lothian Buses services are being diverted away from the area, with alternative routes being used.

Service 2 is unable to serve Candlemaker Row and the Grassmarket, and is instead diverted via Lothian Road and Lauriston Place eastbound. Westbound services are diverting via Lauriston Place and Lady Lawson Street.

Services 41 and 42 are unable to serve George IV Bridge and are diverted via Nicolson Square, South Bridge, North Bridge, Princes Street, South St David Street and George Street in both directions.

And services 23 and 27 won't be able to reach George IV Bridge and are diverted to Frederick Street, Princes Street and Lothian Road in both directions.

The Central Public Library confirmed just before 9am that they'll remain closed throughout Wednesday.

In a tweet they said: "We're sorry to say that we will remain closed today due to yesterday's fire and the ongoing closure of George IV Bridge."

More than 60 firefighters were on the scene on Tuesday night, and Chief Officer of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Martin Blunden said on Wednesday morning: "Physically challenging conditions yesterday for @fire_scotland firefighters & officers attending the complex fire in Edinburgh (plus 290 other incidents we attended across Scotland). Thank you to those staff and operations control for keeping it all moving."
