Edinburgh commuter road closed after large section caves in amid adverse conditions

A busy commuter route to Edinburgh has been closed due to a huge landslip caused by adverse weather conditions.

Emergency crews raced to the A68 south of Patthead, Midlothian, after a large section of the road disintegrated over the course of Tuesday evening.

Heavy showers from a number of thunderstorms caused the road to become flooded before a large chunk of it caved in.

Some parts in the east of Scotland are said to have seen around 80mm of rain fall in just a matter of hours on Tuesday evening.

Drivers will have to take a 25 mile diversion to avoid the area (Police Scotland)

Dramatic pictures taken from the scene on Wednesday night show the devastation caused by the unsettled conditions, which have wreaked havoc across much of Scotland over the week.

Police Scotland has urged motorists to be aware of a lengthy 25-mile diversion in place to avoid the impacted area.

Drivers will have to take a detour through Galashiels before they can join the A68 once again.

It is unclear when the issue will be resolved.

A spokesperson for Midlothian Police said: “The A68 south of Pathhead to Soutra is currently closed due to weather related surface damage.

“It is anticipated the road closure will cause significant disruption for those who use the route to commute from the Scottish Borders to Edinburgh.

“Diversions are in place and we would appeal to motorists for their understanding and patience.”
