Edinburgh revellers left terrified as firework 'launched into crowd' on Calton Hill

Terrified Edinburgh revellers have told how fireworks were launched into the crowd on Calton Hill leaving many shaken up.

The incident happened on Friday Night shortly after 9pm on the grassy area of the hill.

The popular spot for fireworks is attended by many for Bonfire Night every year with crowds gathering to get a glimpse of the numerous displays across the city.

The cold November evening started well with groups of revellers enjoying the fireworks from a distance but after a while the crowd turned to panic as witnesses said someone launched a firework into the crowds, the Tab reported

The shocking video shows a firework going off just metres away in the middle of a path sending red sparks shooting into the air. Miraculously, there were no reports of injuries.

Crowds can be heard screaming and shouting as the firework comes towards the crowds before going off.

Edinburgh University student Viola Baker said: “So the whole night it was super busy on Calton Hill, and there was a constant stream of people going up and down the steps.

“I was definitely feeling a bit apprehensive about walking along the grass as soon as we got there because it was just so dark, and back in 2019 we also went up Calton Hill on Bonfire Night and people then were firing fireworks off towards people, and setting bins on fire etc.

“I think it happens every year to be honest. I got there at around 8pm and people were definitely setting off fireworks from Calton Hill behind the National Monument but they were aiming towards the sky so that was all fine and fun to watch.

“But then at around 9:20 that’s when someone fired them towards the grass where people were standing.

“Also because it was so dark as well as busy it was really hard to see anyone unless they were right next to you, so it would’ve been basically impossible to tell who was setting off the fireworks unless you were standing right next to them when they set them off.”

New legislation recently came in only allowing fireworks to be set off between 6pm - 11pm.

Across Bonfire Night weekend there were many reports of anti-social behaviour involving fireworks across the city.

Including dozens of yobs throwing fireworks at passersby and into traffic in Niddrie.
