Edinburgh restaurant fumes after customer 'with Covid' caught out partying

An Edinburgh restaurant have hit out at an endless stream of 'no shows' since reopening in May.

Dine took to social media on Saturday (June 19) to vent their frustrations after the no shows and last minute cancellations were making their business "unsustainable".

Appealing to customers across the city, the eatery stated that they had seen 24 empty tables on Saturday, as well as 29 the day before, leaving them urgently out of pocket.

A second post from the restaurant also described their fury after a customer had posted about how much they were looking forward to dining with them, but then cancelled 30 minutes before their booking.

In a disappointing twist, Dine had then seen the customer out partying on social media just a few hours later.

The tweet read: "One table cancelled 30-mins before the sitting because someone had fallen ‘ill’ with Covid. Their Facebook account showed them smashed and dancing in Rose Street."

With no shows and cancellations becoming a huge issue in restaurants and bars across Edinburgh, Dine also announced that they would be taking credit card details for bookings of over four people.

They added: "The additional food costs and wages is unsustainable when we are trying to rebuild a business and save jobs."

Similar frustrations have been seen in other venues, with a wine bar in Corstorphine left almost empty after 14 people failed to show up for their tables.

Last week, an Edinburgh manager of two small independent capital restaurants also pleaded with customers to think of the devastating impact of cancelling last minute during the pandemic.

Jade Johnson, who runs Noto and Aizle in the city centre, told Edinburgh Live they suffered 47 cancellations in just three days, and asked customers to only make a booking if they could definitely make it.
