Edinburgh residents urged to have their say on short-term lets as council launch consultation

Residents in Edinburgh can have their say over proposals to tighten restrictions on short-term lets after the Scottish Government announced a crackdown last month.

The SNP hope to introduce sweeping measures that will give local councils more powers to regulate Airbnbs and other short-term lets.

Edinburgh Council revealed plans for the capital to be designated as a "short-term let control area" to safeguard residential homes.

The measure was among a host of choices that the city council could take when it draws up its City Plan 2030, which will be adopted in 2021.

What would change?

A “short-term let control area” would mean “planning permission will always be required for the change of use of whole properties for short-term lets”, under new rules being introduced by the Scottish Government.

The council believes there are 14,000 Airbnb listings in the capital – while the Scottish Government has announced that local authorities will be able to licence short term lets by spring 2021.

The authority has always maintained an ambition to cap the number of short term lets in certain parts of the city.

The council are now urging local residents to share their opinions over whether they agree with the proposed changes.

You can fill out the consultation here - which closes on 27 March 2020.
