Edinburgh residents triumph over housing developers after 350 home plan rejected

A new Edinburgh housing development has been rejected by the city council today after a wave of objections from local residents.

The site just off of Ravelrig Road in Balerno had been earmarked by developers for 350 new houses, as well as a community building and health centre.

However, after plans were first unveiled just over a year ago, a development and management sub-committee of the council officially refused the application at a meeting on Wednesday (May 26).

An official review had states that the proposals were "not considered to be a sustainable development", and highlighted a series of potential issues with the development.

A main factor in the refusal was seen to be a failure to comply with a series of policies in terms of transport both in and out of the area, as well as accessibility.

Due to the main bus route in Balerno, the service 44, being a significant distance away from the site, as well as the nearest train station being as far as Curriehill, the review stated that the homes wold be "car dependent".

It was also mentioned that this would mean limited modes of sustainable transport for the new residents, which would impact on air quality in the area.

The review added that: "The application fails to demonstratethat the will development will not have an adverse impact upon air quality, and thereforeit does not comply with LDP Policy Env 22."

The plans had also received over 200 objection comments on the planning portal from local residents, who had made concerns over the damage to greenbelt land, as well as strains on local education and health services.
