Edinburgh residents share 11 of the worst pothole-ridden roads in the city

There are not many things that get drivers and cyclists more wound up than potholes - and Edinburgh's roads (especially our cobbled streets) aren't exactly known to be a smooth ride.

We've already seen Edinburgh Council ruthlessly mocked online after claiming that there had been a record-breaking improvement in the city's roads, with motorists protesting that there were "potholes galore".

And now a keen cyclist has taken to Twitter to find out what is the "most 'moon-like' surfaced road in the city?"

Andrew White wrote: "So #Edinburgh #bike lobby, I'm throwing the dented gauntlet down!

"What's the most 'moon-like' surfaced road in the city? I reckon Lauriston Street takes the crown. Any challengers?"

Scores of people took up his challenge, sharing their own worst enemies, from West Coates to Elm Row junction - do you agree with these contenders?

1. Lauriston Street

(Google)

Lauriston Street kicked off the debate and, as you can see, this city centre road needs some TLC.

2. West Coates

(Google)

West Coates is a main route into the city, so it's not surprising that this road is said to be a troublesome spot.

3. Cameron Toll

The roads in the Cameron Toll area have clearly taken a good bashing, judging by this photo.

4. Newbattle Terrace

(Google)

Newbattle Terrace in Morningside is reportedly "lunar" or, as another cyclists put it, a "bike shuddering shocker".

5. Braidburn Terrace

(Yully6/Twitter)

A cyclist share a clip of his cycle on the "moon-like" surface of Braidburn Terrace in the Greenbank area - and it looked it like an uncomfortable ride.

6. Gardner's Crescent

(@jules878/Twitter)

Gardener's Crescent isn't great either.

7. Fountainbridge/Dundee Street

(Google)

Fountainbridge, just before it becomes Dundee Street, is another contender.

8. Haymarket Terrace

(Google)

Haymarket Terrace, described as: "Crumbling surface and terrible bottleneck to boot".

9. Elm Row junction

(Google)

Leithers can you confirm this one for us? Two voters gave Elm Row junction a shout out on the road map to Edinburgh's worst potholes.

10. Oxgangs Farm Drive

(Google)

A local said Oxgangs Farm Drive was in serious need of resurfacing.

11. Frederick Street

As if the cobbles weren't bad enough...

Now that's off everyone's chest, what happens next? One option is raising it with the council...or, as one user suggested, the winner could receive a rubber duck that can be rehomed in a flooded pothole?

If you want to see more potholes, Edinburgh Live found a total of eight potholes within a ten-minute walk of our Leith office - and we took plenty of photos to prove it.

Meanwhile, there have been reports of "car killer" potholes in Edinburgh following recent bad weather which has seen a surge in complaints; have you experienced this?
