Edinburgh residents' safety fears on street with no lights for 'over a year' during tram works

Edinburgh residents say they fear for their safety at night on a street with no lighting as it undergoes tram extension work.

Leith residents have contacted the council multiple times over the last 12 months asking when the lights would be fixed on Constitution Street and to their dismay the street still remains unlit at night.

Images show the narrow walkway in darkness due to the lack of lighting with the road currently closed off to traffic due to tram works which meant the street lights were removed.

A number of residents told Edinburgh Live the situation has been going on for around a year and despite contacting the council repeatedly they are still awaiting a solution.

They say the dark and narrow street makes locals feel increasingly unsafe to walk along at night as well as being inaccessible due to being poorly lit.

Locals say there have been several reports within the community of individuals being followed home and approached at night which is adding to the fear among residents.

The narrow unlit street is barely a metre wide - seen below - sparking safety fears due to the lack of light.

A local resident posted online: "I can confirm that absolutely nothing been done to fix the lights on Constitution Street, despite dozens of residents complaints over the last 12 months, these lights have been out for more than a year now!

"Does anybody know who the community police officer is for Eh6…this is now ridiculous! Are the council waiting for an assault, a rape, a stabbing, a robbery or a life threatening accident before they do anything?"

Another fuming resident said: "‘Constitution Street has already been wrecked by the tram works and the width of the pavement makes it nearly impossible to get past safely.

"Now the lights are out, it is even more dangerous. You wonder if it is going to take someone getting seriously hurt for the council to do anything about fixing them."

A Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the issue with lights on Constitution Street and have arranged for the Council’s street lighting team to carry out a repair on Monday morning.

"In the meantime we are installing temporary lighting on the street tonight (Friday).”
