Edinburgh resident slams overflowing bin as scraps scattered on New Town pavement

Locals in Edinburgh city centre were left unhappy this week after a number of bins were seen to be overflowing in the area.

An image of one communal receptacle on Northumberland Street was taken by a nearby resident on Friday (April 9), to share their disgust at the scene.

Photographed at around 7.30am, a number of bags had been dumped at the side of the bin, with many then split open and their contents spilled over the pavement.

Taking to social media to vent their frustrations, the resident wrote:

"Come on @Edinburgh_CC please take better care of our beautiful city. This situation in Northumberland Street has been reported several times."

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, they added:

"I am disappointed that the council has not taken the opportunity of road works to install those deep underground waste facilities commonly used across the EU.

"These ugly street bins are often over flowing and the council often fails to adapt its collection routine when there are different circumstances- the Festival, road work etc."

In response, the City of Edinburgh Council stated that the increase in overflow is due to the current working from home rule, which has increased the amount of waste in residential bins.

Cllr Karen Doran, Environment Vice-Convener, said: “Due to the pandemic a lot of people are working from home which is producing a large increase in domestic waste across the city. We’re working as quickly and efficiently as we can to make sure that we keep the city clean.”

The council also added that the waste on Northumberland Street has now been cleared.
