Edinburgh resident bombarded by festival noise he can hear in living room

A Craigmount resident has hit out at the Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) and Edinburgh City Council for the noise pollution that is reportedly 'emanating' from Edinburgh Park.

Mr Devine stays in the Craigmount area and he has spoken with Edinburgh Live regarding the disruption that the noise from the Live at Edinburgh Park event is causing.

The resident told Edinburgh Live that not only can he hear the noise when in the garden but that he can also hear the EIF doing sound tests with the windows shut and sitting in their living room.

The Edinburgh West resident says that at the moment it is only sound testing and that he fears how disruptive the festival noise could be when up and running fully.

Mr Devine has said that he has already lodged a complaint with the council’s environmental health team.

He said: “In the evenings at the start of the week, neighbours and I noticed a lot of music outside that was intermittent. It was clear that the noise was coming from something akin to a set up for a music festival but we couldn't work out where this was coming from.

“Having traced the noise I found it is coming from the new Live at Edinburgh Park festival venue. Last night I could hear the noise in my own home (windows closed) for over an hour as they had warm up/tested equipment.

“This is set to get worse for the area as the festival kicks off and we have things in full swing. I don't think I'll be the first in the area to complain. I feel the council creating this space in the suburban area means that they think noise limits don't apply. If this was in the Meadows or Princes Street gardens I know for sure they would not be emitting the same noise.

“I spoke to some neighbours earlier in the week who told me that the noise was really grating on them but they couldn't work out where it was coming from - this was before my revelation.”

Live events will take place from August 7-29 August at the temporary outdoor pavilion at Edinburgh Park with acts such as Blue and Gorillaz frontman, Damon Alburn, performing at the venue.

An Edinburgh International Festival spokesperson said: “The Festival has had no noise complaints throughout the construction of the outdoor venue in Edinburgh Park or for our test event last night. As we prepare to stage safe performances in three outdoor venues in Edinburgh we will continue to be mindful of our local environment, with almost all of our concerts finishing by 10pm.”

The council is understood to have been out examining the site and is said to be looking into the matter on Friday 6.

A Council spokesperson, said: “We’ve received a complaint and we’re investigating with the event organisers.”
