Edinburgh resident 'absolutely astonished' as council make her paint door green

An Edinburgh mum has been forced to paint her front door another colour by the council in a 'crazy situation' after painting it pink.

Miranda Dickson, 49, lives in the New Town area of the city and has now painted her door turquoise after the council deemed that the colour of the door was "not in keeping with the historic character and appearance" of the building.

The New Town resident originally painted the door pink while renovating her home - only to receive a notice from the council because the colour contravened guidelines in the New Town's UNESCO World Heritage site.

Miranda said: "It is very disappointing as I love this city but it is not a museum. I am very disappointed as I spent a lot of time creatively designing the inside of my house and the front door is part of that vision.

"It is sad that people seem to not like it - so much that they have complained to the council about it. That is, as I understand it, the issue with it as someone did complain.

"I like the colour pink and pink was a colour that was popular during the Georgian era. It just has offended lots of people in this city."

After the 18-month long renovation of her property, which finished at the end of 2021, Miranda received an enforcement notice from the authority.

She was also told she would receive a fine of up to £20,000 if the colour of the door wasn't changed after an anonymous complaint was made to the council. Her appeal was turned down and she was given until April 20 to change the colour of the door.

Miranda is confused about why there has been so much fuss made about the door being painted pink, she continued on: "I don't know why people are so bothered about this but it is absolutely astonishing and is bizarre.

"I feel disappointed that Edinburgh City Council have spent a lot of time and energy on a woman, single mother living in her house with a pink front door when there is all sorts of other things which are more pressing issues.

"I respect and understand that we live in a conservation area and I love that and I spent a lot of time restoring those features in my property but I think a colour of a door is somewhat different."
