Edinburgh records more Covid-19 deaths as Scottish Government warn they could impose new restrictions

Edinburgh’s Covid-19 death toll continues to rise as the Scottish Government warned they could impose new restrictions.

The latest Public Health Scotland data shows that there were another 20 deaths recorded in Edinburgh during the month of October.

The figures may yet rise higher as the PHS statistics can sometimes take days to update records of further deaths.

Throughout July, August and September, Edinburgh has recorded around 20-30 deaths per month, as the new variants spread across the country.

According to the data on the National Records of Scotland there have now been 919 Covid-19 related deaths in the capital city, and 11,672 across Scotland.

The latest PHS data on new infections shows that Edinburgh is sitting fifth highest in Scotland, with 225 new cases recorded as of November 2.

The most infectious neighbourhood in Edinburgh is Corstorphine, with 39 new infections among their 5692 residents over the latest week.

West Lothian also recorded another 22 Covid-19 related deaths this month, taking the total deaths in the county to 366 since the pandemic began.

Meanwhile, Health Secretary Humza Yousaf has warned that new restrictions could be imposed to cope with the coronavirus pandemic throughout winter.

Speaking to MSPs at Scottish Parliament today he said: “There are early signs that case numbers may increase again hereafter. The situation remains precarious.

“As you would expect, presiding officer, the Scottish Government continues to explore all options for how it will respond to the evolving pandemic and we will not hesitate to strengthen the protective measures in place if it proves necessary to do so.

“The uncertainty and risk we face as winter progresses means now is certainly not the time to relax our approach. We all need to redouble our efforts to adhere to the protective measures in place and follow the guidance.”
