Edinburgh records more Covid-19 deaths as Nicola Sturgeon warns over new restrictions

More Covid-19 deaths recorded as Nicola Sturgeon considers new restrictions as the new variant begins to spread.

The latest Public Health Scotland (PHS) information shows that there have now been 11 coronavirus related deaths in Edinburgh for the month of November, in total, five more than when we reported on the issue last week.

The PHS numbers can take a while to update but at this stage it appears as though Edinburgh will record on a reduction on previous months.

Since the summer months the number of deaths had creeped up again after the initial success of the vaccination programme and were averaging 20-30 deaths per month.

The National Records of Scotland data shows that there have now been 935 deaths in Edinburgh, up on the 930 last week.

The latest PHS information for new infections shows that Edinburgh is the second highest in Scotland for new infections, with 206 as of November 28.

This means the capital city has an infection rate of 319 per 100,000, creeping closer to the national average of 338.

Meanwhile, Nicola Sturgeon says Scotland must move fast to halt the spread of the new Omicron variant.

The Scottish First Minister suggested that there could be more limits on travel after Boris Johnson announced on Saturday that all international arrivals to the UK will have to submit more expensive PCR tests and self-isolate for two days.

Travellers from six African countries currently red-listed by the UK must enter into hotel quarantine for a period of at least 10 days.

The restrictions will come into place across the four nations and Sturgeon hinted that ministers are considering further measures.

She told the BBC’s Andrew Marr: “It’s important to get a proportionate response to this. I think we may have to go further on restricting travel in the days to come, I hope I am wrong but we must keep our minds open to that.”
