Edinburgh rail bridge works will lead to road closures lasting months in city centre

Major works on Edinburgh rail bridges will cause road closures and diversions in the city centre.

The £1.7m project to repair and re-paint two railway bridges in Edinburgh City Centre at Calton Road and New Street.

The works will star ton January 10 with grit blasting, steelwork repairs, steel strengthening and painting work is all set to take place and is scheduled to finish by August next year.

A lane closure will be in place on Calton Road for most of the year, from January 17 until August 19.

The closure of New Street will take place from April 26 to August 19.

Drivers are advised to plan ahead whilst the road closures as a diversion will be in place via Calton Road, Watergate, Canongate and Cranston Street.

The work is aimed at enhancing and protecting the structures against the elements.

This forms part of Network Rail’s commitment to running a safe and reliable railway.

Network Rail commented on how the work will make the railways more secure in Edinburgh.

Christina Thomson, Scheme Project Manager at Network Rail said: “The investment we’re making in the bridges will… extend their lifespans.

“The work will allow us to continue running a safe and reliable railway in and around Edinburgh.

“We’re pleased to confirm that while New Street will close during the second phase of the works, Calton Road will remain open throughout the project, with a lane closure in place.

“Drivers should plan their journeys in advance as some delays may occur while the lane and road closures are in place.

“We are thankful to the community for their patience and understanding while we carry out these essential works.”
