Edinburgh punters flock to beer gardens for a pint despite miserable weather

A number of people were seen braving the rain across Edinburgh today to make their beer garden bookings.

Some might say that 'only in Scotland' would you see a group frozen to the core and drenched, but still managing to enjoy a pint at venues across the city.

With hospitality reopening on April 26, current rules only allow alcohol to be served outside, meaning that if you want a drink you'll need to wrap up warm.

But after four months of lockdown, venues have found themselves fully booked for weeks despite the al fresco set up, as families and friends look to reunite over a couple of pints.

The last few days have seen a mixture of weather fronts make their way over the city, from sunshine and cloud to drizzly showers.

However, Monday (May 3) has brought some of the worst downpours for weeks, with constant rain forecast for the entire day.

Some locals in the Grassmarket had been clever enough to bring a golf brolly to cover the table, with others tucking themselves under the restaurant's canopy.

One pair had turned to using their scarves as headwear, with another couple seen raising a glass in their full winter parka jackets, a smart move in comparison to some who just chose to brave the elements and got pretty soaked.

With Edinburgh's forecast to remain cloudy for the rest of the week and with further downpours set for the weekend, it will not be the last time beer gardens are a little damp.

But fear not, as the capital is set to move into level two on May 17, with the restrictions from then to allow the consumption of alcohol inside.
