A popular Edinburgh pub will be selling off the majority of its contents this weekend (5/6 December) due to ongoing uncertainty around when pubs in the capital will be able to reopen due to the coronavirus pandemic, and plans to redevelop the site into student flats.
Edinburgh is currently at level three of Scotland's tiered Covid lockdown system, meaning pubs can't sell alcohol and must close by 6pm. Many pubs have chosen to remain closed as it would not be financially viable to operate under those conditions.
The Barrel House at Jock's Lodge posted details of the sale on Facebook, writing: "Saturday and Sunday 5th & 6th 12-5pm Furniture, glassware, music equipment art work, garden sheds (man/lady caves) and everything in between.
"Grab a bargain!"
People reacted to the post with sadness, with many people expressing concern that the pub appeared to be closing down. One person wrote: "Sad reflection of the times."
Another added: "That’s just so sad. I don’t usually do pubs, but went here twice for lunch and it’s was really good place to be, food was great, the staff really lovely. Good wishes to owners and staff for better things."
A Barrel House representative told Edinburgh Live:
"We are unable to trade until next year and have already lost one of our other bars so we are selling some gear to pay bills and wages. Not sure what the future holds as Star pubs are selling the building to a developer and will bulldoze and build student flats. So at this time we are just trying to pay the ongoing rent."
