Edinburgh pub renames itself 'Gayz Onley' in mocking response to bigoted graffiti

A popular pub in Leith has been praised for its brilliant response to being targeted by bigoted graffiti.

The Dreadnought in Leith was daubed in spray paint with the slur 'Gayz Onley'.

But the staff mocked the vandals for their 'badly-spelled jibe' and decided to have some fun by officially changing their name to 'Gayz Onley'.

Posting on Facebook, they shared a photograph of the pub sporting Pride flags and a new name with a freshly created placard above the door with the words 'Gayz Onley'.

Crediting the brilliant idea to their manager Roisin Therese, they wrote: "So here we are - for one week only - Gayz Onley, (currently) North Fort St's only pop-up Pride bar!

"We'll be celebrating diversity, having a laugh and raising money for The Equality Network, with the help of some fantastic breweries, DJ Jez and Yer Uncle Harry (more on those later in the week)."

One regular posted: "And I thought you lot couldn’t get any better, you smash it out the park again!"

While another quipped: "Onley genuiz."

The team also added that though the name "may suggest exclusivity", they are as inclusive as they've always been and. that everyone was welcome (provided they follow the pub's hilarious dress code).

They said: "Our policy has always been the same: be whoever you are, you're welcome here (assuming you're not a twat). Oh, and wear decent slacks, of course."

The last line was a crack at the fact the pub recently went viral for banning what they referred to as 'jobby-catchers' and 'mankles'.

A photo posted with the post showed that ‘jobby catchers’ were two piece trackies, while ‘mankles’ were turned up jeans coupled with bare ankles.
