Edinburgh pub offers free lunches to kids after MPs vote against zero cost school meals

A pub in Edinburgh offering takeaway drams and pints during the central belt's hospitality lockdown have announced that they'll also be offering free takeaway lunches to school kids on their half term break.

The Black Cat on Rose Street shared a picture of their sign on Instagram letting locals know that they are offering free cheese toasties and crisps "for any and all children on their school holidays."

The bar tagged Boris Johnson's Instagram handle in the post, with the caption "Welcome, children, to the Let Down By Your Government Club."

The news comes after the UK Government ruled out extending free meals nationwide beyond term time, leaving nearly one million families in difficulty, according to the Mirror. Tory MPs blocked the motion presented by Labour yesterday.

The move would have extended provision of hot food for children until Easter 2021.

Boris Johnson told Tory MPs to vote against the plan, saying that it was not the job of schools to “regularly provide food during the school holidays”.

In Scotland, our government has made £10m available to local councils to continue to fund free school meals over the Christmas, February and Easter breaks, with local authorities that offered provision over the October school break able to be reimbursed.

The Black Cat is at 168 Rose Street and will be offering free lunches throughout Scotland's half term holidays for schools.
