Edinburgh pub Black Rose Tavern's anti-spiking beer mats campaign praised

An Edinburgh pub's campaign to introduce special beer mats designed to stop drinks being spiked has been praised.

The Black Rose Tavern introduced the anti-spiking mats last year. They have a hole in the lid to allow a straw to be pushed through when they are placed on top of a glass.

Each mat also has advice on how to seek help for customers who fell unsafe - they can go to the bar and "ask for Angela" to receive help without attracting attention.

A number of initiatives helped the New Town pub pick up its second Best Bar None award last year, which recognises responsible licensed premises.

The beer mats have also been praised in a report to Edinburgh council's licensing committee, and been recognised nationally.

The report said: "Their continued success is driven by 'the two Alison’s', Alison Morrison and Alison Wilson, who are extremely pro-active supporters of the Best Bar None scheme and best practice.

"They have been directly involved with the introduction and support of a number of significant nationally recognised schemes, such as bringing the 'Ask Angela' scheme to Scotland more than two years ago.

"They’ve recently introduced a scheme which prevents drinks spiking via modified beer mats, and were actively promoting it during the National Awards evening even after winning all of the above National Awards.

"They attribute their success to their continued commitment and investment in developing their own knowledge and experience, including their staff, via ongoing training and development and review of best practice."

Announcing the beer mat scheme on Faceboook in December, the Black Rose Tavern posted: "We are starting a new campaign!

"We have beer mats on the tables and behind the bar.

"They have holes in for a straw to stop anyone adding anything unwanted and spoiling your night!"
