Edinburgh protest against 'scapegoating of disabled people'

Members of the Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty plan to protest outside the offices of Atos healthcare in York Place today.

Atos carries out tests on behalf of the UK Government to establish whether or not people are fit to work. Employment minister Chris Grayling said last month that there was "clear evidence" of need for change in the welfare system.

Figures published by the Department of Work and Pensions show three-quarters of sickness benefit claimants are found fit to work.

Michael Brownlie, of Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty, said today's demonstration is part of a UK-wide week of action. He said:

"We are determined to stop the scapegoating of disabled people. It's time to protest and fight back."

The protest, the second in a month, is due to take place between 11am and 1pm.

As well as pickets outside Atos offices, a protest on Westminster is expected to attract thousands on Wednesday.
