Edinburgh professor slams 'Western complacency' over wait and see approach to tackling coronavirus

An Edinburgh University professor has slammed the "complacency" around dealing with the coronavirus pandemic in the Western world while we still had time.

Devi Sridhar, Professor and Chair of Global Public Health, spoke to Sky News about how countries such as the UK, had the "benefit of time" when preparing for the virus to hit.

In the interview, the Edinburgh University professor blamed a "lack of humility and listening" over the Western world not acknowledging that the situation in China would be happening to them in just a few weeks.

Professor Sridhar told Sky News: "There was a lack of listening and a lack of humility from western countries of what was happening in East Asia.

"We've been lucky in the United States and the United Kingdom to have the benefit of time.

"It was almost like having a time machine, what was happening in East Asia was where we would be in a few weeks."

The professor questioned why the time before the virus hit the UK was not used more valuably.

She said: "There was kind of just a wait and see approach and widespread complacency that this just can't happen here.

"Basically this outbreak is playing out in different parts of the world in time that gives other countries time to listen, learn and to prepare. "
