Edinburgh primary school and nursery shut down over Covid outbreak

An Edinburgh primary school and nusery is to close temporarily following an outbreak of Covid cases among staff and pupils.

At least seven classes at Buckstone Primary School are self-isolating while several teachers have also been sent home over fears of the virus spreading.

It comes as the latest Scottish Government figures showed a rise in the number of cases across the NHS Lothian health board area, with 213 registered in the last 24 hours.

All pupils at the school and adjacent nursery will move to remote learning from next week, subject to a review by the council and health board in seven days' time.

Parents were informed of the closure on Friday afternoon in an email communication making arrangements for digital learning.

Deep cleaning protocols have been initiated with the school set to undergo rigorous disinfection over the next few days.

A hub for the children of key workers will also be closed down until case numbers drop.

Another Edinburgh primary, Davidson's Mains, is due to reopen on Monday after a two-week closure due to an outbreak of the virus.

An email sent to parents read: "Following further consultation with the Health Protection Team, NHS Lothian & City of Edinburgh Education and Environmental Services we have had to make the difficult decision to return to remote learning for all pupils next week and close the School and Nursery to all children.

"This is because cases are continuing to spread and further steps, including self-isolation of close contacts and closing the school are considered necessary by the Health Protection Team, to reduce the risks of transmission of the virus.

"We recognise that this will be very challenging for many families and I can assure you that it is not a decision that has been taken lightly.

"We are committed to re-opening the school as soon as it is considered safe to do so and I will update you on Friday 11 June, following the next review meeting."
