Edinburgh power cut causes school closures and disruption across the capital

A power cut in Edinburgh has caused significant disruption on Thursday (August 19) after many residents woke up without electricity.

Throughout the morning a number of reports were made in both the Leith and Newhaven area of no working power, with Scottish Power officials stating they had "no advance warning" of the shortage.

Affecting both the EH6 and EH7 post code areas, the electricity supplier also stated that they had been alerted to the issue at around 7.50am, with teams now working along Easter Road substation to fix the problem as quick as possible.

Hoping to have the power restored by 11am, a number of residents have now reported that their electricity has come back on.

However, at around 8am, Leith Academy issued an urgent message to staff, pupils and parents after the school was confirmed to be without power.

In tweet, they said: "Due to a power failure in the Leith area, no pupil is to attend Leith Academy at the moment.

"We are talking to Edinburgh Council and will put further updates out via the school website and GroupCall when we have them."

Currently, the school has not offered an estimated time when pupils will be able to head back into the school, on what is only the second day of the new academic term.
