A man has been hospitalised after being hit by a car at a busy Edinburgh shopping centre.

Residents reported how officers were scrambled to the scene after hearing sirens blaring around the area.

A 45-year-old man has since been taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for further treatment, however police remain in the area.

One eyewitness told Edinburgh Live: “We’ve been here since about 9:30 and it was already like that when we got here.

"It wasn’t taped up yet but there were like three ambulances here. One big one and two small car ones.

"They’re not telling anyone what’s going on.”

A spokesperson confirmed an investigation into the incident was ongoing with a forensic tent erected outside a branch of Home Bargains while police have cordoned off the car park while the probe continues.

They added: "Officers were called around 9.30am on Thursday 14 April 2022, to a report of a man being hit by a car at Westside Plaza Shopping Centre in Wester Hailes, Edinburgh.

"The 45-year-old's been taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
