Edinburgh police set up cordon blocking busy footpath amid 'incident'

Police have set up a cordon on a busy Edinburgh footpath amid an incident.

Officers were called to the Water of Leith footpath in the Trinity area, on the section of the footpath that runs under Craighall Road near Victoria Park, sometime on Saturday morning.

A cordon had been erected blocking the path, where it runs under the bridge, and was still in place at around 12pm this afternoon. Officers had also set up a "police incident" sign.

The cordon remained in place at around 5pm this evening.

Police have not made it clear why officers are at the scene or if anyone has been injured following an incident. The force said they were "making enquiries" into an abandoned vehicle in the area, believed to be a Seat crossover.

A passerby told Edinburgh Live: "There was a police car parked across the path and tape up to stop you from getting past.

"It was really busy on the path this morning and walkers and cyclists were having to turn around as you couldn't get around it.

"I think something bad must have happened, there were also what appeared to be plain-clothed officers there."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police are making enquiries in relation to a vehicle, believed to be a Seat crossover, abandoned in the area. Anyone with information about the vehicle should contact police via 101."
