Edinburgh Police release urgent warning due to increase in car thefts

Edinburgh Police have taken to social media to release a warning to vehicle and motor vehicle owners after an increase in attempted theft in the city.

The statement outlines that Police Scotland have recently been made aware of thefts and attempted thefts or both cars and motorbikes in the Edinburgh area and despite modern lock systems on most vehicles, some criminals are still willing to do damage to cars to overcome this.

It states that some criminals have acquired devices to overcome the locks on cars or motorbikes, buying them cheaply of the internet. These devices work by affecting the radio frequency imitated by the key/fob device, enabling vehicles to be stolen despite owners having possession of the keys.

In a bid to help people ensure their vehicle is not subjected to potential theft, Police Scotland have given some tips and advice for people on where to park and how to make sure their vehicle is as secure as possible.

With dark winter nights heading our way, some of these tips may be essential for motorists to avoid criminal damage and theft.

Steering locks

Consider using steering locks as a visible deterrent to thieves - someone who is so obviously conscious of security is less likely to leave valuables in a vehicle.

Faraday pouch

Keep your key device/fob in a faraday pouch, which has a lining that prevents the items inside from receiving or transmitting radio frequency signals.

Park sensibly

Avoid parking in dark, secluded areas. Choose locations that are well lit and over looked by houses, passers-by and covered by CCTV if possible.

During the winter it is easy to ignore well-lit areas as it may be light when you arrive, but darkness falls a lot quicker and your car may become vulnerable.

The post also instructs people to not store keys near windows or doors.

There is an attached in-depth leaflet to the post with more ways in which you can keep your vehicle secure. Some of these include: always use your garage if you have one, fit a tracker and avoid leaving items on show inside the car.
